ANTIQUE PERFUMERY AT ITS BEST

An Exclusive Original from the Sharif LaRoche Collection
Hyrax Cigar - an exquisite earthy-musky, slightly smokey Mukhallat with a subtle crisp floral top note. Antique perfumery at its best - the musky note embedded in this aromatic composition is "African Stone" or fossilized hyraceum of the Southern African Hyrax. These century old droppings infuse the ancient animalic note into Hyrax Cigar, and the result is unparalleled and deeply complex. Truly a mesmerizing scent for all.

WHAT IS HYRAX
The Hyrax is a small, furry herbivorous mammal found in the Southern parts of Africa and the Middle East. They are members of the family Procaviidae and the order Hyracoidea, and the oldest fossil found of their ancestry has been dated back 37 million years ago at a site in the Middle East. They are mistakenly seen as rodents, in fact, the hyrax are more closely related to elephants, as they have characteristics common in elephants, such as small tusks developing from their incisor teeth, flattened nails on their toes lacking claws, similar development of genitalia and longer gestation periods in females. There are four species of Hyrax; the rock (cape) hyrax (Procavia capensis), the yellow-spotted rock hyrax (Heterohyrax brucei), the western tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax) and the southern tree hyrax (Dendrohyrax arboreus). The Hyrax live in large groups in rocky cliff areas, where they can be seen huddling together basking in the sun.

Cape Hyrax

WHAT IS HYRACEUM
The petrified and fossilized excrement of the Cape Hyrax is called Hyraceum, also called the Dassie. This fairly sterile fossilized excrement, made up from urine, faeces, pollen, plant residue and food, is highly valuable within perfumery as well as in traditional South African medicine. Hyraceum is also called "African Stones", as it hardens and becomes rock-like during centuries of fossilization, and has a very complex scent similar to notes of deer musk, castoreum, civet, agarwood and tobacco. It has shown to be very useful in the treatment of epileptic seizures, for stomach problems, ear infections, back problems and as a tranquillizer.
